boice has shared the lyric video for new single Could’ve Been My Life which is set for release on 28th February.
Following on from December’s Just A Tourist, Could’ve Been My Life has been lifted from boice’s new album, his third, Preset Emotions which is due for release on on 28th March.
The album has been produced, composed, programmed, arranged and performed by boice and can be preordered here
The song is, no doubt, rooted in boice’s own family dysfunction, as boice is quick to point out when quizzed on the subject. “I’ve had this long-standing joke with a relative that my mother and father (who never lived together and I’m estranged from) caused so much heartache in my life that they couldn’t possibly be my parents,” he says. “So, I must have been switched at birth! And thus, the concept for this song was born!”

“Despite the very dysfunctional family I grew up in, in Pittsburgh”, says boice, “music was a constant presence. I had my own musical tastes which were rooted in Top 40 radio but I was always drawn to music from the UK – although as a kid I just thought everyone was from England! – and I constantly read magazines like Smash Hits. But then I borrowed armfuls of vinyl from my next-door neighbour, Mark, and learned about ‘60s and ‘70s rock music.”
The artist goes on to cite a list of musical heroes which include Bowie, Prince, Kate Bush, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Elvis Costello, Madonna, Paul McCartney, The Beatles and Taylor Swift, before alighting on two unlikely bedfellows as direct influences: Morrissey and Tina Turner! “Morrissey taught me that you could sing about anything in a pop song,” he says. “Just make it catchy. To this day, his song-writing gives me the courage to sing about whatever I want.” And Tina Turner? “Well, apart from having a toxic mother, like I do,” he tells me. “She also taught me how to sing my songs whilst thinking of the character’s intentions.”
