Louis Saha wants to see Marco Silva remain at Fulham but he “can see the attraction” of the head coach joining a bigger club like Tottenham. Amid a lot of speculation regarding Ange Postecoglou’s future at present with Spurs languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table and now out of both domestic cup competitions, a host of names have been linked with the Spurs hotseat.
Silva is one of those to be mentioned in recent weeks, with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Thomas Frank of Brentford also linked. Since departing Everton in 2019, Silva has proved to be an instant hit at Fulham after taking them from the Championship to establish them as a Premier League regular once again.
The Cottagers are currently ninth in the Premier League table and in with a shot of Europe, with the team also coming up against Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup at the beginning of March. It is perhaps no surprise to see Silva linked with a move away from west London but Saha wants to see the Portuguese boss take his current side to even greater heights.
“Marco Silva has been brilliant for Fulham, and he’s one of those managers that has improved in the Premier League,” said the former Tottenham man in an interview with Paddy Power. “He wasn’t getting results like this at his previous clubs, but he’s kept his style and managed to bring in players at Fulham and make them better, which is a huge achievement for him.
“I can see the attraction of him joining a bigger club like Tottenham if they do replace their manager, but I do wish the best for Marco because he’s done well. I don’t want him to go because I like Fulham playing the way they play. He can bring them into Europe and onto a bigger stage – he can build something special.
“The atmosphere around the club is brilliant, and they can still improve by bringing in some world-class players and building even bigger.”
Talk surrounding Postecoglou’s future could intensify to new levels this weekend should Tottenham lose at home to Manchester United on Sunday evening. Saha believes that it will be the Red Devils who prevail in N17.
“Manchester United and Tottenham are not in the best shape at the moment. At the moment, Ange Postecoglou is in more danger than Ruben Amorim, so it’s a must win for Tottenham,” added Saha. “United are also always looking for consistency – they won an important game in the FA Cup against Leicester which will help build their confidence, but they’re still very fragile.
“United have tended to perform well against the big sides, so I predict them to win – they’ll have a little edge to push them over the line.”
One player who will be intent on ensuring that is not the case is Mathys Tel, who will make his first appearance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since his switch from Bayern Munich. Amid Tel’s quest to make a huge name for himself in the game, Saha has called on his fellow countryman to take a look at Arsenal ace Bukayo Saka as the perfect example.
“The only advice I can give to Mathys Tel is to keep being obsessed about his football and trust his process,” said Saha. “Youngsters like him are really able to understand this pressure, but he’ll need help around him, and people to challenge him and help him focus on the process.
“When you look at Bukayo Saka, he is well-balanced – he’s talented, but he always wants to improve and has added more goalscoring to his game. Tel needs to keep improving what he can offer – that would be my main advice to him. I hope that he is in the first team straight away.”
